Story replies and story mentions
Updated
Not every conversation starts under a post. Someone answers your story with “price?”, or posts their own story and tags you in it. Dartzo has two triggers for those moments: Reply to my story and Mention in a story. Both send a DM to the person who reached out.
How they differ
| Reply to my story | Mention in a story | |
|---|---|---|
| What fires it | A fan sends a reply to one of your stories. | A fan @-mentions your account in their own story. |
| Keywords | Optional. You can match words in their reply, or reply to every story reply. | None. There’s no text on a mention, so it fires on every one. |
| Which story | Any story. You can’t pick a single story yet. | Any story that mentions you. |
| Exclude words | Yes (Advanced). | No — nothing to exclude from. |
| Public reply under it | No. There is no comment to reply under. | No. |
Both are account-wide. A comment automation belongs to one post; these belong to your whole account, so they have no post to pick. If you switch an automation from a comment trigger to one of these, the studio warns you that the post you chose will be detached. And once an automation is saved, its trigger can’t be changed — create a new one instead.
Reply to my story
The first step in the studio reads Story — Any story, then Keywords. You have two choices there:
- Reply to every story reply — switch this on and no keyword is needed. Anyone who replies to any of your stories gets the DM.
- Keywords — add words like
PRICEorMENU. Dartzo reads the text of the reply and fires only when it matches. Matching ignores capital letters. How the words are compared is covered in Keyword match modes.
A reply that doesn’t match any rule just doesn’t trigger an automation. It still lands in your Instagram inbox like any other message.
Mention in a story
When someone tags you in their story, there is no sentence for Dartzo to read, so the keyword section is replaced by a single line: *Fires on every story mention (no keyword).* Every mention gets the DM.
This is a good one for a thank-you plus a small reward, because the person has just shown your account to their own followers. Keep it warm and short; you are talking to someone who already likes you.
What the fan receives
You write the DM exactly as you would for a comment automation: the message, an optional link, and {{first_name}} / {{link}} placeholders. One difference worth knowing: because the fan has just messaged you, the conversation is already open, so the first DM can carry your buttons straight away. On a comment trigger the first message is a private reply, and it can only carry the quick-reply opt-in, not a link button. See Buttons and links.

{{link}}The limits that apply
| Limit | What it is | Whose rule |
|---|---|---|
| Reply window | 24 hours from the fan’s message. Dartzo’s own deadline is 18 hours, so a send never lands at the edge of the window. | Instagram’s 24-hour messaging window, minus Dartzo’s 6-hour margin |
| One DM per person | A fan who replies to your story five times in a day gets one DM from that automation, not five. | Dartzo’s guard (24-hour cooldown per automation and person) |
| Sending speed | Up to 100 messages per second for these triggers. They don’t use the hourly allowance that comment replies use. | Instagram’s messaging throughput |
If a DM can’t go out the moment it’s matched, it waits in the queue and is sent while the window is still open. If the window closes first, it’s marked as expired in your delivery log instead of vanishing. Limits and windows has every number, and How delivery works explains the queue.
