Pause, edit, duplicate or delete an automation
Updated
Once an automation is live you will want to stop it, fix a typo, copy it for the next Reel, or remove it. Each of those does something slightly different to people who are already partway through, so this page spells it out. Every action is on your Automations list, and most are also in the studio.
The statuses you will see
| Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Live | Active. New comments or messages that match it are answered. |
| Paused | Switched off. Nothing new matches it, and its settings are kept. |
| Draft | Not live yet. A draft never fires and does not use up your automation allowance. |
On the list, open the ··· menu on a rule (labelled More actions) for Publish (drafts only), Pause rule or Resume rule, Duplicate and Delete rule. The Edit button sits next to it. Inside the studio, a live automation shows a Live badge with a Stop button, or Paused with Resume.
Pausing
- Choose Pause ruleFrom the ··· menu on the list, or press Stop in the studio. The badge changes to Paused straight away; if the server cannot save it, the badge reverts and shows the error.
- Resume when readyResume rule (or Resume in the studio) puts it back to Live. A draft is the exception: it can only go live through Publish, which re-checks everything.
Pausing is the right move when a promo ends, a link is broken, or you want to rewrite something before more people arrive. What it does:
- New comments, story replies and messages no longer match it. Only live automations are considered when something arrives.
- Messages already waiting in the queue are held. Nothing more goes out from this automation while it is paused. See below.
- Buttons already in fans’ DMs stop working. If a fan taps a quick-reply button that belongs to a paused automation, nothing is sent. Dartzo will not answer with some other automation’s message instead.
- Your settings are kept. Keywords, message, link and buttons are exactly as you left them.
An automation can also pause itself. If the Instagram post it was watching is deleted, the rule is paused automatically and shows a Post deleted badge. Resuming it clears that note.
Editing a live automation
Press Edit on the list. The change is made to the same automation, never copied into a new one, so there are no duplicate DMs from an edit. The studio saves as you go, but keeps your in-progress changes separate from what is live:
- A quiet line near the top says Saving… and then Saved, with not live yet next to it while your changes are unpublished. A failed save says “Couldn’t save — retrying”; it never claims a save that did not happen.
- Nothing changes for fans until you press Update. The button is greyed until something actually changed.
- Discard changes goes back to the live version if you change your mind, and Undo steps back through your recent edits.
- Pausing or resuming from the studio uses the Stop and Resume buttons, separate from editing. An edit never silently re-activates a paused automation.
What an edit means for people already in progress
| You change | Who it affects |
|---|---|
| Keywords, match mode, post | Only comments that arrive after Update |
| Message, link, buttons | DMs sent after Update, and any DM still waiting in the queue (including ones held by a pause), which is built from the current wording when it is sent |
| A quick-reply button or its follow-up | A fan who taps later gets the current follow-up. If you removed the button, a tap does nothing |
| The destination link, on Pro, Max or Ultra | Links in the message text that were already sent are updated to the new address. Button links already sent are not |
| Trigger type | Cannot be changed on an existing automation. Create a new one |
If you only fix a keyword, there is nothing to worry about on a Pro-gated feature: an automation that already used one keeps saving, and only newly adding something your plan does not include is refused, with a message that says what and why.
Two automations that would tie exactly (same post, same keyword and mode, or two “any comment” rules) cannot both be live, because the second could never fire. Update refuses it and points at the one already doing the job. See Which automation wins.
Renaming
At the top of the studio there is a box with the placeholder Name this automation. Give it a name of up to 80 characters; extra spaces are tidied. Clear the box and the list goes back to the title taken from the post’s caption. Renaming changes the label only, never how the automation behaves.
Duplicating
Duplicate in the ··· menu makes a copy and opens it in the studio. The copy is always a Draft, so it can never fire alongside the original while you tweak it. It carries over the post, keywords, match mode, message, link, buttons and follow-ups, public reply, lead capture, AI setting and pin priority.
Check two things on the copy before you go live: it does not carry over the name, and it does not carry over a reply delay. Set them again if you used them. A draft does not count toward your automation limit, but going live does, and it must also clear the tie check above. If you duplicate to run the same offer on a new Reel, change the post first. Otherwise the copy would tie with the original.
Deleting
Delete rule asks you to confirm (“This can’t be undone.”) and then removes the automation permanently. If you might want it back, pause it instead. A paused automation costs nothing to keep, although it still counts toward your limit.
Deleting stops new matches the same way pausing does. Taps on its old buttons do nothing, because there is no longer an automation to answer them.
How many automations you can have
| Plan | Automations |
|---|---|
| Free | 100, under fair use |
| Pro, Max, Ultra | No limit on the number |
Only automations that are not drafts count, so a paused one still uses a place. On Free, the list shows a banner once you are using all 100,, and Dartzo refuses the next one with a clear message rather than letting it save and not work. Upgrading removes the cap. Nothing about your follower count affects the limit. See Plans and features.
A realistic example
A Delhi sneaker reseller runs a “Comment DROP” rule for a Reel. On Sunday night the stock sells out. He presses Pause rule, which stops new comments from matching. On Monday he presses Duplicate, changes the post to the new Reel and the link to the new pair, renames the copy “Jordan restock”, and presses Go live. The old rule stays paused as a record.
