Reply publicly under the comment
Updated
A public reply is a short comment Dartzo posts under the fan’s comment, while the real message goes to their DMs. It does two jobs: it tells the person to look in their inbox, and it shows everyone else scrolling the post that something is happening. The DM does not depend on it. If the public reply is skipped or fails, the DM still goes.
Where to turn it on
Public replies exist only for comment automations. Story replies, story mentions and DM keywords have no comment to answer, so the option is not shown there.
- Open the studioIn the Simple studio it is the first row of More options, called Reply on comments. In Advanced it sits under Add-ons, with the same name.
- Switch it onTurning it on fills in a starting line, Sent! Check your DMs 💬, which you can edit. An empty box saves as no reply, so the switch always writes something real.
- Add wordings if you wantPress + Add a reply variation to add alternates. You can add up to 4, so up to 5 wordings in total with the main one.
- Go livePress Go live (or Update on an existing automation). Turning the switch off again clears the reply and its wordings.
Why rotate the wording
If two hundred people comment and every one gets the identical “Sent! Check your DMs 💬”, the comment section reads like a machine talking to itself, and repeated identical comments are the sort of thing Instagram’s spam checks look at. With alternates, each comment gets one of your wordings. The choice is fixed per comment, so a comment that is retried gets the same reply, never two different ones.
Each alternate is trimmed to 280 characters, because a public reply should be short anyway. Variations only change the public reply. The wording of the DM itself is a separate setting, called Rotate the wording (Advanced).
| Style | Example |
|---|---|
| Plain | Sent! Check your DMs 💬 |
| Warm | Just sent it over — have a look in your inbox 🙌 |
| Short | Done, it’s in your DMs ✅ |
| Hinglish | Bhej diya! DMs check karo 📩 |
| Specific | The brownie recipe is in your DMs, enjoy 🍫 |
Pro, Max and Ultra also get Use 100 ready-made replies. Switch it on and Dartzo picks from a library of 100 replies instead of your own wordings. Your own reply stays saved underneath, and it is what goes out if your plan ever lapses.
The @name at the start
By default the reply starts with the commenter’s @name, the way Instagram does when you tap Reply, so they get a notification. If your wording already contains their @name, it is not doubled. You can turn this off in Settings under Tag people in public replies, and replies will then be posted exactly as you wrote them.
Daily limits
Posting hundreds of comments a day from one account is something Instagram can treat as spam, so public replies have their own daily ceiling. The DM is never affected by it. Only the public reply is skipped once the ceiling is reached.
- Account limit in Settings under Public reply limit. The recommended and default value is 500 a day. You can choose a preset (500, 1000, 2500, 5000), a custom number from 0 to 5000, or No limit. Setting it to 0 turns public replies off for the whole account. The day resets at midnight in your timezone.
- Per-post limit inside the automation, under Limit public replies per day. You pick from 50, 200, 400 or 800, never above your account limit, and the account limit is always offered as a choice. Every automation on that post shares this budget.
- No limit removes the protection. Instagram’s own spam checks are then the only limit, and if Instagram restricts the account, that lands on you. Think twice before choosing it.
Instagram’s own rules about how many comments an account may post, and about the one private reply a comment can receive, are covered in Limits and windows. We do not repeat them here.
When the reply is posted
On the normal path the public reply goes up after the DM has actually been sent. So if the DM is waiting in line because Instagram asked Dartzo to slow down, the public reply waits with it. There is one exception: if you set a reply delay, the public reply is posted straight away and only the DM waits.
What happens if it fails
A public reply is a nice-to-have, never the contract. Each one ends in one of three honest outcomes, recorded against the message:
| Outcome | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Posted | Instagram accepted the reply. It counts toward the day’s limit. |
| Skipped | A daily limit was reached, or public replies are set to 0. The DM still went. |
| Failed | Instagram rejected the reply. It is given back to the day’s count, so only real posts are counted. |
Settings shows today’s usage under Public reply limit, including how many were skipped after the cap and how many Instagram rejected. Neither ever stops a DM.
Good practice
- Keep it short. A sentence is plenty; the DM carries the real content.
- Do not put the link in the public reply unless you want it visible to everyone.
- Match your voice. A relaxed brand can use emoji and Hinglish; a clinic should not.
- If you use a reply delay, write the line so it still makes sense when it appears a few seconds before the DM. “On its way!” works better than “Sent!”.
