Getting started

Connecting your Instagram account

Link the Instagram account whose comments you want to turn into DMs — what Instagram asks you to approve, and the one step that trips most people up.

Connecting is the first thing you do in Dartzo, and nothing else works until it’s done. You’ll press one button, approve Dartzo on Instagram’s own screen, and land back on your dashboard. It takes about a minute.

Before you press connect

Your Instagram must be a Business or Creator account
Instagram only hands out messaging and comment permissions on professional accounts. A Personal account cannot connect — not because Dartzo blocks it, but because the permissions we need don’t exist on it. Switching is free and takes under a minute: open Instagram → Settings and privacy → Account type, and pick Business or Creator. See Account requirements for the full picture.

Instagram gives no messaging access at all

What Instagram asks you to approve

Dartzo asks for exactly three permissions — no more. You’ll see them listed on Instagram’s authorization screen before you approve anything.

PermissionWhat Dartzo does with it
instagram_business_basicReads your username, account ID, follower count, and your posts and reels — so you can pick which post an automation watches.
instagram_business_manage_messagesSends the DM. This is the whole product; without it nothing can be delivered.
instagram_business_manage_commentsReads the comments that trigger your automations, and posts a public reply when you turn one on.
Dartzo never asks to publish posts or reels on your behalf, and it never asks for your password. Instagram issues Dartzo an access token instead, which we store encrypted and which you can revoke at any time from Instagram’s own settings.

Connecting, step by step

  1. Press Connect Instagram
New accounts see this on the dashboard as step 1 of setup. If you’ve connected before, go to Connections and press Connect another.
  2. Approve Dartzo on Instagram
You’re sent to Instagram’s own authorization screen, where you sign in as the account you want to automate and approve the three permissions above. Dartzo never sees what you type there.
  3. Land back on your dashboard
Dartzo exchanges Instagram’s one-time code for a long-lived access token, reads your username and follower count, and stores the connection with the token encrypted. Your posts and reels appear immediately — there’s no waiting period.
  4. Build your first automation
With the account connected, pick a trigger and compose the DM. Your connected accounts stay visible on the Connections page, where you can reconnect or disconnect any of them.

The same path reconnects an account later — it replaces the stored token and lifts a permission stop.

Early access: you need a tester invite first

Instagram renames these menus between app versions. If a label doesn't match exactly, look for the nearest equivalent — the path is the same. Fastest route on a computer: open instagram.com/accounts/manage_access/ while logged in as the right account, and use the Tester Invites tab. On Android the in-app path may read Settings → Website permissions → Apps and Websites.

Dartzo is in limited early access while Meta reviews the app. Until that review finishes, Instagram only lets accounts that have been invited as testers — and have accepted the invite — complete the connection. This is Meta’s rule, not ours.

Rather than send you to Instagram to hit an error with nothing to act on, Dartzo checks first: if your account isn’t approved yet, pressing Connect Instagram takes you to the access request form instead.

  1. Request access
Give us your Instagram username and a WhatsApp number including the country code. Both are required — the username is the exact string we paste into Meta’s invite, and the number is how we reach you if the invite gets stuck. You can add a note about what you want to automate.
  2. We approve you and send the invite
A person on our team reviews the request, usually within a day, and you get an email when the invite is sent. Your status is shown on the request page the whole time — you never have to guess.
  3. Accept the invite inside Instagram
Open instagram.com/accounts/manage_access in a browser, signed in as the account you’re connecting. Open the Tester invites tab and accept the invite from Dartzo. On Android you can also reach it under Settings → Website permissions → Apps and Websites → Tester invites.
  4. Come back and connect
Return to Dartzo and press Connect Instagram. Instagram will now let the authorization through.
Being invited is not the same as accepting
This is the single most common reason a connection fails. The invite lands inside Instagram, not in your inbox, and the Instagram mobile app hides the page it lives on — open the link above in a browser instead. If connecting fails right after you were approved, the invite almost certainly isn’t accepted yet.

Reconnecting

The Connections page has a Reconnect button on every account. Reconnecting runs the same approval screen again and replaces the stored access token with a fresh one. Use it when Instagram starts refusing your sends, or when we email you asking for it.

  • Sign in as the same Instagram account. Reconnecting a different account creates a separate connection and won’t fix the first one.
  • If Dartzo had stopped sending because Instagram refused on permissions, a successful reconnect lifts that stop automatically and sending resumes.
  • A stop we applied for spam signals is deliberately not lifted by reconnecting — that one is a judgement about how the account is being used, and only our team can clear it.
  • Reconnecting does not touch your automations, your queue, or your delivery history. Nothing is lost.
Reconnecting only fixes a token that was missing a permission. If your sends still fail afterwards, the cause is one of the other two: the tester invite isn’t accepted, or the account is Personal rather than Business or Creator.

Disconnecting

Disconnect on the Connections page removes the account, its automations, and its stored access token. You can also remove Dartzo from your Instagram settings at any time — we delete the associated data either way.

I pressed Connect Instagram and got a request form instead of Instagram.
That’s the early-access gate. Your account isn’t approved as a tester yet, so Dartzo stopped you before Instagram could hand you an error you couldn’t act on. Fill in the form and we’ll email you when you’re approved.
Instagram showed an error when I tried to authorize.
Three things cause this, in order of likelihood: the tester invite hasn’t been accepted inside Instagram, the account is Personal rather than Business or Creator, or you signed in as a different Instagram account than the one we invited. Check all three, then try again.
Do I need a Facebook Page?
No. Dartzo connects through Instagram Login, so you sign in on Instagram directly and no Facebook Page is involved.
Can I connect more than one Instagram account?
You can — the Connections page has Connect another, and lists every account you’ve connected. Your dashboard and automations work on the most recently connected Instagram account.
What does Dartzo actually store about my account?
Your Instagram username, account ID, and follower count, plus the access token Instagram issued, encrypted at rest. We also record which permissions Instagram granted, so that when a send is refused we can tell you why instead of guessing.
Will connecting post anything to my account?
No. Dartzo has no permission to publish posts or reels. It sends DMs, and posts a public comment reply only on automations where you turn that on yourself.
