Instagram comment-to-DM: the complete guide
Updated
You post a Reel and say “comment LINK and I’ll send it to you.” Two hundred people comment. You now have two choices: spend your evening copying a link into two hundred DMs, or let software do it. That second option is comment-to-DM, and this guide explains how it works, what Instagram does and doesn’t allow, and how to run one that really delivers.
We build a comment-to-DM tool, so we have a view. But the most useful thing we can tell you is the part most tools leave out: the rules Instagram sets, because they decide how well any automation works, ours included. Where a number appears below, it comes from our published Limits and windows page, which says for every figure whether it is Instagram’s rule or a guard we chose.
What comment-to-DM actually is
Instagram doesn’t let you put a clickable link in a caption, and links in comments aren’t tappable either. So creators started asking for a keyword: “comment GUIDE and I’ll DM you the PDF.” Commenting costs the viewer almost nothing, it pushes your post to more people, and a DM gets opened far more reliably than a link buried in a bio.
Comment-to-DM automation is the part that answers. You choose a post, choose a keyword, and write the message once. From then on, every comment that contains the keyword gets your DM, with your link, within seconds, whether you are asleep, shooting, or offline.
Instagram calls the message a private reply. That detail matters, because the private reply has its own rules, and they are the reason this guide exists.
The rules Instagram sets
A private reply is a special kind of message. It is the one way a business can message someone who has never messaged it first, and Instagram restricts it on purpose. These are the rules that apply to every tool, with no exceptions for a paid plan:
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| One private reply per comment | Each comment can receive exactly one private reply. Not one per hour or per tool, one ever. Meta’s own documentation says the same: one message to the commenter, and a second one only if they respond. |
| A 7-day window | The private reply must be sent within 7 days of the comment. After that, that comment can’t be answered. |
| A professional account | Your Instagram has to be a Business or Creator account. A Personal account has no messaging permissions to grant. See Instagram account requirements. |
| A pace limit | Instagram’s documented cap on private replies to comments is 750 per hour per account. |
| Message size | 1,000 characters of plain text, or 640 if the message carries buttons. Up to 3 buttons, with labels of 20 characters. |
You can read Meta’s description of private replies in its Instagram Platform documentation.
What happens after someone comments
- Instagram tells the tool a comment arrivedThe tool is notified the moment the comment is posted. It records it and doesn’t send anything yet.
- The comment is matched to an automationThe tool compares the comment against the keywords of your live automations for that post. No match, no DM. If two automations match, the more specific one wins. See Which automation wins.
- The DM is sent or queuedIf there is room under the pace limit, it goes right away. If not, it waits in line and goes out as soon as there is room, as long as the 7-day window is still open.
- The result is recordedA good tool tells you what happened to each one: sent, expired, or failed with a reason. How delivery works walks through every state.
Why “instant” is not the whole story
Most tools say your DMs go out instantly. Usually they do. The cases where they don’t are the ones that cost you leads, so it is worth knowing them.
- A viral post. If thousands comment in an hour, no tool can send more than Instagram allows. The honest approach is to queue the rest and send them as capacity frees up, inside the 7 days. Dartzo does this and shows you the queue. See Why DMs get queued.
- Two tools on one account. Because only one private reply per comment exists, two comment-to-DM tools connected to the same account race for it, and the loser is refused permanently. If you are switching tools, switch off the old one first. More in Another tool is replying.
- People who can’t be reached. Someone may have blocked the account, or the comment may have been deleted before the DM went out. Those are recorded with a reason. They are not hidden.
- Message requests. If the person doesn’t follow you, Instagram may file your DM under Requests instead of their main inbox. Many people don’t look there, so the line in your Reel matters as much as the DM.
Setting up a good one
The mechanics are easy. What separates an automation that converts from one that doesn’t is mostly the words.
Pick a keyword people will actually type
Short, specific and spellable: LINK, GUIDE, PRICE, MENU. Say it out loud in the Reel exactly as you want it typed. Matching ignores capital letters and finds the word anywhere in the comment, so “send me the link” and “LINK pls” both fire a LINK automation. Be careful with very short words, because a keyword like “hi” sits inside “this” and “which”. Keyword match modes explains how matching works, including emojis, misspellings and Hinglish such as “price kitna”.
Write the DM like a person
The commenter should feel that a friend typed it. No tech talk, no explaining how Instagram works, no wall of text. One greeting, what they asked for, the link.
Hey {{first_name}}! Thanks for commenting 🙌
Here’s the eggless brownie recipe, with the ingredients in grams 🍫
{{link}}Put the link in the message text, not only on a button. On Instagram’s desktop site the buttons don’t show. More on this in Links and buttons in your DM.
Add a public reply, and vary it
A short public reply such as “Sent! Check your DMs 💬” tells the commenter to look, and tells everyone scrolling that something is happening. If two hundred people get the identical sentence, the comments start to look automated, so rotate a few wordings. The DM never depends on the public reply. If the public reply is skipped, the DM still goes. See Reply publicly under the comment.
Decide whether to ask for a follow
You can tie the link to a follow. The Access gate sends a first message with a single button, and when the person taps it Dartzo asks Instagram whether they follow you. Followers get the link, non-followers get a nudge to follow first. Details, including the cases where the link is released anyway, are in Access gate and asking for a follow.
What comment-to-DM can’t do
- Message people who haven’t commented. The private reply exists only as an answer to a comment. There is no way to cold-DM your followers through it.
- Send more than one message from a comment. After the private reply, you can message the person again only if they reply or tap something. That is why follow-ups on a comment automation start from a tap. See Follow-up messages.
- Work on a Personal account. Switch to Business or Creator first. Your posts and followers stay as they are.
- Reach people after 7 days. A comment older than the window can’t be answered by any tool.
- Trigger on a new follow. Instagram doesn’t send an event when someone follows you. We explain what works instead in Can you auto-DM new followers on Instagram?
Live comments are a separate case: Instagram accepts a private reply to a Live comment only while the broadcast is running. Dartzo doesn’t offer a Live trigger yet.
Beyond comments: the other ways in
Not every conversation starts under a post. Dartzo has triggers for the others too, and they follow a different clock because the person has already messaged you.
| Trigger | What fires it | Window |
|---|---|---|
| Comment on a post or Reel | A comment with your keyword | 7 days from the comment |
| Reply to your story | A reply to any of your stories | 24 hours from their message |
| Mention in a story | Someone @-mentions you in their story | 24 hours from their message |
| Someone DMs a keyword | A typed DM containing your word | 24 hours from their message |
Read more in Story replies and mentions and DM keyword triggers. Dartzo’s own deadline is a little inside each window: 18 hours for the 24-hour ones and 6 days 18 hours for comments, so a send never starts at the edge of a closing window.
Is it allowed?
Comment-to-DM through Instagram’s official API is allowed. What gets accounts in trouble is tools that log in with your password and tap buttons like a bot. We cover the difference in Is Instagram DM automation allowed? The short version: use a tool that connects through Instagram’s own permission screen, never one that asks for your password.
Walkthrough: your first one in Dartzo
- Make sure the account is Business or CreatorIf it is Personal, switch it in Instagram’s settings. See Instagram account requirements.
