Can you auto-DM new followers on Instagram? The honest answer
Updated
You want a welcome message to go out the moment someone follows you. It is one of the most searched-for things in Instagram automation, and it is also one of the questions where tools are least honest. So here is the plain answer: no, not on the official route. Instagram doesn’t tell tools when someone follows you, so a tool can’t react to a follow.
Dartzo doesn’t have a “new follower” trigger, and we don’t pretend to. That is a deliberate choice. This guide explains why it isn’t possible, what to be careful of when a tool says it is, and the things that do work for the same goal: welcoming people, giving them something, and growing your followers.
Why Instagram doesn’t allow it
Automatic DMs on Instagram work through events. When a person comments, replies to a story, mentions you, or sends you a message, Instagram notifies the connected tool, and the tool can answer within a set window. Following isn’t one of those events. Nothing is sent to a tool when someone follows you, so there is nothing for it to react to.
It also lines up with the principle behind all of Instagram’s messaging rules: a business may reply to someone who reached out, and may not start a conversation with whoever it likes. A follow is a one-tap action, not a message, so it doesn’t open a door to a DM.
So how do some tools claim to do it?
You may have seen tools that promise to “welcome every new follower.” We can’t see inside every product, so we won’t say what any one of them does. But the possible methods are limited, and none are good:
| Method | The catch |
|---|---|
| Logging in as you and checking your follower list | This needs your password or a session, which is exactly the behaviour that gets accounts restricted. The official API has no such access. |
| Sending DMs from a bot account or the app itself | Not the official route, and outside Instagram’s rules. See Is Instagram DM automation allowed? |
| Waiting for the person to comment or message first, then calling it a “follower DM” | This is legitimate, but it isn’t a reaction to a follow. It is a comment or DM trigger with a follow check, which is the honest version of what you want. |
If a tool says it DMs people the second they follow, ask how, and ask whether it needs your password. If the answer is vague, assume the method is risky for your account.
What works instead
The goal behind “DM new followers” is usually one of three things: welcome people, give them something, or get more of them to follow. Each has an official route.
1. A keyword that earns a message back
Put your offer where people already are and tell them which word to use. “Comment WELCOME and I’ll send you my starter pack” or “DM me START.” The person comments or messages, which opens the conversation, and your automation replies. This is the comment-to-DM flow in Instagram comment-to-DM: the complete guide. The two triggers that suit a welcome best:
- Someone DMs a keyword. A fan who types “start” or “price” into your DMs gets an automatic answer within 24 hours. Put the word in your bio and pinned Reel. See DM keyword triggers.
- Reply to your story. Run a story with a question or a “Reply GUIDE” prompt, and anyone who replies gets your message. See Story replies and mentions.
A story mention works too. When someone tags you in their story, Dartzo can send a thank-you with a small reward. A mention is an action the person took toward you, so it is a legitimate trigger. It isn’t a follow, but it does reach people who are already interested in you.
2. The access gate: make the link a reason to follow
If you want followers specifically, don’t try to message after the follow. Put the follow before the link. With the Access gate, a comment gets a short first message with one button and no link. When the person taps it, Dartzo asks Instagram whether they follow you. Followers get your link and non-followers get a nudge with a Visit profile button and an “I am following ✅” button that checks again.
A few honest details, all from our docs on Access gate and asking for a follow:
- The check is one question about one person, asked at the moment they tap. Dartzo doesn’t read your follower list.
- It only happens on a tap. That is the point where Instagram lets a tool ask. It can’t be done in the background.
- It isn’t airtight on purpose. If Instagram’s answer lags, someone who just followed could be told they haven’t. After three taps where Instagram still says no, Dartzo sends the link anyway. If the check can’t answer at all, the link also goes out. We would rather a real lead get the link than get stuck.
- There is a softer option, “Ask them to follow first,” which is only a polite request and isn’t checked. See the comparison in the docs page.

[ Send me the access ]3. Build the welcome into your profile and content
Some of what “DM new followers” tries to do doesn’t need automation. A clear bio line, a pinned post with your keyword and a highlight called “Start here” do the welcoming job for people who look around. And a link-in-bio page gives them something to tap. None of these claim a reaction to a follow. They just give a new follower an obvious next step.
What to say, and what not to say
Write like a person. Don’t explain how Instagram works, and don’t mention how you found them.
| Don’t write | Write |
|---|---|
| “Thanks for following! You are subscriber 1,204.” | “Hey {{first_name}}, glad you’re here 🙌 Here’s the guide I promised.” |
| “Instagram only lets us message you because you commented.” | “Thanks for the comment! Here’s the link 👇” |
| “Follow us to unlock our full catalogue.” sent to everyone | Only send a follow ask when it is the gate on a link the person asked for. |
Also remember that messages from an account someone doesn’t follow may be filed under Requests, which many people never open. A strong call to action in the post matters as much as the DM.
Walkthrough: a welcome-style setup in Dartzo
- Connect a Business or Creator account
- Create a DM keyword automationIn the Automation Studio, switch to Advanced, then under Account-wide pick “Someone DMs a keyword.” Add words like START and WELCOME.
- Write the welcomeA short greeting and your link, such as a freebie or a booking page. Don’t put the only link on a button, because buttons don’t show on desktop. See Links and buttons in your DM.
- Tell people the wordPut it in your bio, your pinned Reel and your stories. The automation can only answer people who use it.
- Add the gate if you want followersSwitch on the Access gate so the link goes to people who follow you. Then press Go live. For the first-time walk-through, see Build your first automation.
