Instagram comment-to-DM automation for coaches and course creators

You post a Reel, someone comments the word you asked for, and they get your link by DM — automatically, the instant Instagram allows it.

You teach on Instagram, and the moment you say "comment WORKOUT and I'll send you the plan," you've created a job: watch the comments, copy usernames, open DMs one at a time, paste a link, repeat — for however many people actually comment. Do that for a launch with a few hundred comments and it eats an entire afternoon, and the people you reply to an hour later have mostly stopped thinking about you.

Dartzo replaces that afternoon with a rule you set once: when someone comments a keyword on that Reel, they get the DM within seconds. Set it up once per post, and it runs for as long as the post keeps getting comments.

The setup

  1. Pick the post and the keyword
Choose the Reel or post you're promoting, and the word you'll ask people to comment — "PLAN", "CALL", "NOTES". You can also mark it to apply automatically to your next post, so a new launch doesn't need a new setup.
  2. Write the DM once
Text, your link, and up to three buttons. Add an opening line if you want the DM to start with something other than the link straight away, and a public reply that shows under the comment so the commenter knows to go check their DMs.
  3. Add a gate if the link is worth guarding
Turn on follow-to-unlock for a lead magnet you only want followers to have, or ask-to-follow for something softer. Turn on lead capture if you want an email before the link — with CSV export so it lands in whatever you already use to email people.
  4. What the fan sees
They comment the word, get a public reply under their comment within moments, and a DM lands with your link and buttons — reading like you sent it yourself, because as far as Instagram's rules go, you did.

What to write

Comment keywordWhat the DM saysWhere it sends them
PLAN"Here's the plan I mentioned — save it before you lose the link 🙂 [link]"A free workout or lesson plan, gated behind follow-to-unlock
CALL"Booking link's below — grab whichever slot works, no back-and-forth needed. [link]"A calendar booking page for discovery calls
COURSE"Sending you the enrollment page now — spots are open this week. [link]"A course sales page, with lead capture on so you get their email even if they don't buy yet

What to expect

The DM doesn't send the moment the comment appears, technically — it sends the instant Instagram's rules allow it, which for a normal launch is a matter of seconds. What actually varies is volume: Instagram allows exactly one private reply per comment, ever, and caps how many private replies an account can send per hour. Dartzo paces under that cap on purpose rather than sending at the edge of it, because sending at the maximum is how accounts get restricted, not how they stay healthy.

If a Reel goes properly viral and comments arrive faster than Instagram will accept sends, the extra DMs queue — they are not dropped, and they still respect the reply window (roughly 7 days for a post or Reel comment). Every one of those jobs shows up in your delivery log with an explicit status: sent, queued, expired, or failed with a reason. You're never left guessing whether a launch's DMs actually went out.

Limits worth knowing
One private reply per comment is Instagram's rule and can't be raised by any tool, including this one — if someone comments your keyword five times, they get one DM, not five. A DM with buttons only renders on mobile; Instagram shows text with no buttons on desktop, so put your link in the message text too, not only on a button. Full numbers: Limits and windows.

Common questions

Can I run this on a Live, not just a Reel?
Yes — Live comments are a separate trigger. The catch is Instagram only accepts a private reply while the broadcast is still running, so a Live DM either sends within about a minute or is marked expired rather than queued for later.
What if someone comments the keyword on an old post from months ago?
It works the same way as a fresh post, as long as the automation on that post is still active and Instagram's reply window for that comment hasn't closed. "Apply to my next post" is there for when you don't want to re-set-up each new post by hand.
Can I ask for their email before sending the link?
Yes, with lead capture turned on — it asks in-thread, in the DM itself, and every email you collect exports to CSV. That's a Pro-and-above feature.
Does the fan know a bot replied to them?
The DM reads as a normal message from your account — plain language, no platform mechanics mentioned, because that's the whole point of automating it. What they experience is a fast reply, not a bot disclosure.
What happens to comments that don't use my keyword?
Nothing from this automation — no match, no DM, no job created. If you've turned on AI replies, unmatched DMs (not comments) can get an answer drawn from your own FAQs instead of going unread.
